If you live in a house, chances are you’re the one who’s responsible for maintaining things. What’s interesting though, is that some people never actually check out their windows! They’ll clean and organize and repaint walls, but hardly anyone ever checks the state of their windows.
So, how do you actually go about doing so? Typically windows will last around 20 years or so, and in places where severe weather is common, they may not even last that long. To help you out, we’ve put together an article that teaches you all about the telltale signs of windows desperately in need of an upgrade. If you find that one or more of the following items describes your windows, chances are you’re going to need someone to do some windows installation. Here at Canglow Windows & Doors we install and repair windows with incredible precision and care. Call us today for a free consultation.
Your windows are an incredibly important part of your home. They let the sunshine in yet keeping the cold and chaotic weather out. They provide access to the outside world and make your house overall just more aesthetically pleasing. Windows are also on the front lines with respect to security. All you need to do is watch one cop show to understand that windows are what every robber hits first. Alongside all of this is the fact that your windows actually decide how high your energy bills are going to be! With all of this in mind, let’s get on our list.
Table of Contents
Telltale Sign Number One – Ridiculous Energy Bills
If you look back upon your energy bills and notice that your pricing has steadily gone up over the last few years, it may mean your windows are letting in a lot of cold air. To test this out, wait for a cold night. Walk up to one of your windows and test out how you feel. Are you colder than when you’re standing in the middle of the room? If so, touch the actual glass. Is it very cold? If your answer was yes to both questions, your windows need to be replaced. What’s happening here is your windows are actually letting in cold air. At this point, if you were to hold a candle up against the frame and move it around slowly, the flame would go out. On a sunny day, close all your curtains and you may even see light shining through gaps in the window frame. This in turn will make your energy bills skyrocket. Your furnace is working overtime to warm up all that cold air that’s coming in.
Replacing your windows at this point will not only lower your energy bills but warm up the rest of your house far more efficiently. Your furnace is not going to be fighting against defective windows anymore. Be sure to check all your windows in the same way described above to make sure you don’t replace windows that don’t need to be replaced.
Telltale Sign Number Two – Smooth To Open And Close
A super-easy way to tell if your windows need to be replaced or not is to go around your home and simply open and close them. Be sure to pay attention to how doing so feels. If they’re hard to move it may mean the window frame has swollen up and needs to be replaced. It could also mean that the mechanisms making the window move need to be replaced. You don’t want to struggle to open your windows all the time. Replace them and let fresh air into your home with ease!
If you feel as though your window just needs to be repaired rather than full-on replaced, give us a call and we’ll check on whether or not you need new windows installed.
Telltale Sign Number Three – Leaky Windows
Do you ever notice that when it rains water starts pooling on your floor? Do droplets ever run down the inside of your windows? If you answered yes to either of those questions you need to replace your windows. Leaky windows are a sign that the unit’s weather seal is in need of repair or replacement. This happens over time to most windows, and usually isn’t repairable. Most people tend to just replace their windows when this happens. After all, you don’t want your floors to be ruined!
If you find that this telltale sign describes your windows, they probably also suffer from the previous two signs as well. If water can get in, so can air. Not to mention if your windows let in water and air because they warped they probably won’t open and close all that easily.
If your windows are fairly new and experience water leakage they were probably installed incorrectly. Contact us here at Canglow Windows & Doors and we’ll see what the installation company did wrong! Telltale Sign Number Four – No Soundproofing
A prominent telltale sign of whether or not your windows need to be replaced is how well they block out sound. If all you can ever hear is what’s going on outside, you need replacements. A lack of soundproofing can mean your windows were installed incorrectly or were defective in the first place (if they’re new that is). If they’re older, chances are they just wore out and the material doesn’t absorb sound as well as it once did. Perhaps it’s just a low-quality window from a time when windows weren’t as high quality!
