Threat to Apple and Qualcomm Adreno: Samsung set to release a self-developed GPU with new architecture, energy consumption ratio upgrade

When referring to the mobile phones, in addition to the CPU, the GPU is also an extremely important component. In today’s fast-growing game and AI ecosystem, graphics performance is becoming more and more important for mobile phones. On the A11 processor, Apple used a self-developed GPU. In the Android camp, Qualcomm’s Adreno series GPUs have long maintained an advantage. Samsung Huawei and other manufacturers use ARM’s Mali series. Reports have it that will soon witness a Samsung’s self-developed GPU.

Samsung self-developed GPU: the rumours and reports

There have always been rumors that Samsung wants to self-develop her own GPU. Earlier, it was reported that Samsung’s next-generation flagship processor Exynos 9820 may use self-developed S-GPU. However, the latest news shows that it will still use Mali GPU.

Recently, the electronic engineering magazine EE Times published some information related to Samsung’s self-developed GPU. The information states that Samsung’s self-developed GPU will adopt a new architecture, which can be used across platforms. It is not going to be limited to mobile phones. In order to increase the energy consumption ratio, Samsung’s self-developed GPU instruction setup will also change.

In addition, a former director of MediaTek’s technical department has joined Samsung. He was responsible for MediaTek’s GPU project. Lv Jianping first served in Nvidia. While at nVidia, he was responsible for graphics card design and has extensive experience in graphics technology.

EE Times also said that in theory, Samsung’s self-developed GPU can be licensed to other processor vendors. But Samsung has not yet decided whether to develop the market.

Judging from the current information, we can basically confirm that Samsung will launch a self-developed GPU, and there are also bright spots in the architecture and technology. But so far, for the Samsung’s self-developed GPU, no clear parameters and test data have been released.  Besides,  it is too early to guess that it can outwit Qualcomm and counter Apple.
