Obviously, Sony is the world’s largest supplier of camera sensors. On the other hand, Samsung is actually the second largest camera sensor supplier after Sony, and its sensor specifications and performance are comparable to those of Sony.
Earlier this week, Samsung Electronics announced that it has officially launched Samsung Dual Mobile camera Sensors. These sensors are compatible with multiple mobile phones. It is named ISOCELL Bright GM1 and ISOCELL Bright GD1. The biggest feature of these two sensors is that they have very high effective pixels. These pixels can bring unparalleled detail to smartphone photography in the case of sufficient light.
Samsung Dual Mobile camera Sensors: ISOCELL Bright GM1 and ISOCELL Bright GD1 Specifications
With an effective pixel count of 48 million, ISOCELL Bright GM1 is one of the world’s largest smartphone camera sensors. The effective pixels of GD1 also reached 32 million. This far exceeds the main camera level of ordinary smartphones.
Furthermore, both GM1 and GD1 use ISOCELL Plus technology, which has a unit pixel area of 0.8 microns. Under the support of Tetra cell technology, the pixel 4-in-1 function can be supported. In low light, four sub-pixels can be combined into one large pixel. The combined GM1 pixels are 12MP, 1.6-micron unit pixel area; and GD1 merged pixels. Then it is about 8MP, 1.6-micron unit pixel area.
Coincidentally, Sony recently released its new generation of flagship sensor IMX 586. The highest effective pixel of this sensor is also 48 million, and the unit pixel area is also 0.8 micron. It also supports pixel 4-in-1 technology. The total number of pixels is also 12 million, and the unit pixel is also 1.6 microns.
However, It is not difficult to see that the emergence of Samsung GM1 is to directly benchmark against IMX 586. Of course, this is Samsung’s usual tradition. Due to similar technical indicators, many mobile phone makers can reduce the dependence on Sony. Aside from this, Samsung can increase the share of their own sensors in the market.
At present, I don’t know which model the two sensors will start on. Xiaolei guesses that it should be on the new A series mobile phones instead of the Galaxy S series mobile phones. As for the IMX 586, there is news that Xiaomi, Huawei, vivo and OPPO are planning related products. It is believed that mobile phones equipped with Samsung GM1 and GD1 sensors are on the road.
