In this tutorial, I would give a do-it-yourself guide on most DStv decoders XtraView configuration. To be honest, I may not cover each and every DStv decoder, however, my guide will help you be in pole position to configure any extra view capable DStv decoder old, new and future. You will be exposed to useful tips that will aid a successful connection while combining the various decoders.
DStv XtraView is A cost-effective and flexible solution which allows two XtraView capable DStv decoders to be linked together in one household, at the cost of a single subscription plus a monthly access fee is equivalent to the one currently payable for SD PVR and Dual View decoder functionalities.
XtraView allows you to increase the number of TV channels which can be viewed simultaneously in your home without having to pay an additional subscription.
The benefit of DStv XtraView
XtraView allows two qualifying decoders to be linked together in one household without having to pay two full subscriptions. Depending on the allowed decoder combination, you can get up to three different channels on three different TV’s at the same time: 1110 – 1110: This option gives you two different channels in two different rooms with all the interactive applications (such as SuperSport Active & Weather 24) in both rooms.
Important Facts About DStv XtraView/ Extra View Installation
- First off, there is a monthly fee for xtraview and PVR subscription which is separate from your package subscription fee.
- Setting up an extra view on compatible DStv decoder is not rocket science. In other words, you don’t need to need to be a professional satellite installer to be able to set up DStv xtraview. All you need is apt attention to detail.
- A Dualview will never work with any other decoder with XtraView.
- The 3-decoder combination is not available and will not work with any of the older decoders. Hence if any older decoders are involved the maximum number under one subscription is 2. For example, you can use two HD PVR 2PS with one Explora. You can’t use 3 4-Series decoders or HD PVR.
- Most DStv HD PVR from PVR 2P and newer support XtraView setup. No SD PVR DStv decoder support xtraview. Furthermore, HD PVR 2U doesn’t support xtraview.
- While inputting the user bands index frequencies into one decoder, switch off the remaining ones, otherwise, there would be a conflict which can stall the process.
- The easiest and the most reliable LNB for xtraview is the DStv smart LNB LMX-series(e.g lmx500, 501 and 502). LMX501 is still the best in but i don’t think it is still on sale. Smart lnbs are better than the multi switches and the Explora switches.
- The only decoders that can be combined in a 3-decoder mix are Explora 1, 2A, 3A & the series 4-, 5- 6- HD single view decoders.
- The smart LNB LMX502 SLNB is not suitable for 3 decoder XtraView requiring 3 Unicable feeds. LMX501 or LMX500 will do just fine.
- If any of the older decoders are involved only a 2-decoder combination is possible.
- On older decoders(4S/4U and pre-4series) running your heartbeat cable directly is more reliable than using a diplexer. However, this comes at a cost in the sense that you need to provide the space for the extra cable.
- With the older decoders, only the HD PVR 2P, 2U can work with an SLNB. The older single view decoders can only be connected to a Universal port. Hence the better SLNB to get in such situation is the LMX 501 (3- unicable plus 1 Universal port.
- The 2 x 4 Multiswitch can’t be connected to an SLNB LMX 501 as there is only 1 universal port available.
- Note that, there is a distant limit between the decoders in the Xtraview mix. Maximum distance is 30 meters apart. This can be shorter when old decoders are combined.
- The DStv Smart LNB IS the best option these days. This should be so in your case too for a number of reasons, including economics and the need to now get ready for full Hi Band channels.
- The 3A Explora can only transmit or receive heartbeat via the LNB port. So it depends on what decoders you want to combine with the Explora 3A as to how the Heartbeat runs. With some of the older decoders, you will need a diplexer to either insert HB into the LNB port or extract it from the LNB port.
- Especially relevant; if you fail to terminate the unused ports on your smart LNB, you may be exposing the LNB to either signal loss or damage from the weather. In some cases, both. Please always terminate unused ports.
- If or when you must use a diplexer, make sure you are using a diplexer and not a splitter or combiner(they all lookalike). Please learn more here
- A diplexer is always required with an Explora 1 or 4 series HD decoder, or an HDPVR 2U/2P
- Another xtraview fact is that there is a cable length restriction with the Explora 1 and older decoders. This restriction applies only if you want to make use of the SLNB and its cabling for your heartbeat. The workaround for this is to install the HB cable the old way. That is, you need to remove the diplexer from behind the Explora 1.
- Any combination with an Explora 2A, 3A, 5-series, 6- series HD decoder does not require a diplexer, as the HB is transmitted over the LNB cabling and via the SLNB.
Reasons Why you may get an Unsuccessful XtraView Installation
Considering the fact that xtraview installation if done the right way is easy, why do people still run into problems when trying to setup xtraview on their DStv accounts? Below are some of the reasons why.
- Absence of an Extra view subscription or an expired XtraView subscription.
- Trying to use Explora switches for unsupported decoders such as Explora 3a
- Carelessness or oversight during extra view installation.
- Faulty installation materials such as coaxial cables, F-connectors e.t.c.
- Ignorance of how to properly install the diplexer on the decoder.
How to Set-Up a Diplexer on a DStv Decoder
You can either use a diplexer in the normal or reversed way. This largely depends on whether you are sending out the heartbeat pulse to the SLNB or you are receiving it.
For example, if you want to use two Explora 1 for xtraview, then the Primary decoder will need the diplexer and the other will get heartbeat via a cable connected to the RF ports on each decoder.
However, you want to eliminate the need for a separate heartbeat cable and the decoders are all in different rooms then you need two diplexers.
Using a diplexer model
There is only one way to connect a Diplexer, and that is the right way!
You cannot couple/combine a signal between the ANT port and the SAT port without introducing excessive loss because those ports should have isolation of 30dB!
Also, the direction of the signal flow determines which port should be used! (I/O or SAT).
A Diplexer is a frequency sensitive device used for one way signal flow. A Diplexer is not a Duplexer, nor is it a splitter or a combiner!
the labels on some diplexers are odd due to the manufacturers who are predominantly Chinese.
Here’s the correct usage from Aerial King for normal and reverse (when RF-cabling HB (HeartBeat) distribution needs to be created) diplexer use;
Normal usage:
ANT (S1) – connects to the RF In or Out port (depending on the user’s needs)
I/O (PX) – connects to the LNB’s cable coming from the dish
SAT (S2) – connects to the LNB input port
Reverse usage:
ANT (S1) – connects to the RF coaxial cable you will be routing
I/O (PX) – connects to the LNB input port
SAT (S2) – connects to the LNB’s cable coming from the dish
General Requirements for most DStv Decoders XtraView Configuration
Below are some of the imperative requirements for matching and mismatched DStv extra view capable decoders.
- First off, make sure you have your extra view subscription handy. You must pay it alongside your satellite bouquet fee. Without a valid XV subscription, your xtraview will not work.
- Secondly, you have at least two XtraView capable decoders and two or more TV sets – depending on the decoder combination you have chosen
- Any Decoder you are using as Primary with smart LNB should use port A which is the best power-related port.
- Where applicable, get a good diplexer ready.
- Determine the best decoder to be used as the primary decoder(Decoder 1) with default user band indexes.
- Always remember that the primary decoder’s user bands must be different from that of the secondary. In addition, set the decoder type manually from within the settings of the decoder. To do this, press the DStv button on your remote>> then scroll left to settings>>select satellite settings>>open home network and go through the installation wizard. E.g, your primary decoder must be set as decoder one and your sec as decoder 2. You must not have two primary decoders or have none at all. See Images below:
- Your extra view status must read ready and active under settings to certify your subscription. To check your DStv Xtraview status, go to help>>general information>> then, scroll down to xtraview. The status must-read “Ready and Active” See below:
What is XtraView Heartbeat?
The “heartbeat” is the communication sent every 30 seconds from the primary decoder to the secondary decoder via the RF cable which connects the two decoders. The “heartbeat” cable does not carry voltage and the decoders communicate with each other via a 7MHz signal.
Most DStv Decoders XtraView Configuration the Easy way
We are now at the business end of this post. this is the section where i would be illustrating how to set up extra view on individual DStv decoders. As you might have been aware, DStv has removed the RF-IN/OUT as from Explora 3A. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t do an extra view on it.
Especially relevant: Fix “No communication from Primary Decoder E143” During Xtraview Installation
Explora 3A and HD PVR extra view/XtraView Setup
As a reminder, the Explora 3A is not the best PVR ever released by DStv. This is so because RF distribution is not possible easily with this decoder. So, if RF distribution is important to your installation, it is better to get an Explora 2A Instead.
IF RF is required from a 3A, then you will have to make use of an external RF remodulator.
How to combine 3A and HD PVR 2P for Extra view
- Set your Explora 3A as the primary, with the HD PVR 2P as a secondary.
- Secondly, use a diplexer to either extract heartbeat from the 3A or to insert HB into one of the RF ports on the HDPVR 2P.
- Noteworthy, an Explora decoder must be a Primary decoder in a 3-decoder combination, and the Primary should normally be connected to port A on an SLNB.
XtraView with Explora 3A and HD model 4S/4U
Footnote: You cannot successfully get the HB working via the LNB cabling when using the older decoders. The HB via the LNB cabling is designed for use with the Explora decoders and with the HD single view decoders from the 5-Series and newer.

Explora 1 heartbeat to Explora 2A Xtra View Options
To use the Explora 1 as a primary decoder where Explora 2A will be the secondary via the Smart LNB, you will need to connect a diplexer at the back of the Explora 1. Of course, we all know that the Explora model 2A has a built-in diplexer. Diplexers are available at most stores that deal with installation needs.
Take note of the followings when setting Explora 1 and 2a for xtraview
- Set your LNB type to unicable/satcr and connect your cable to unicable port A on SLNB and Unicable in at the back of your explora 1
- Setup up your decoders from the within the decoder settings.
- Your Explora 1 must use index 0,1,2 while the 2a which is your secondary decoder will use 3 and 4.
- Next, connect your diplexer 1 to the back of your Explora 1. The diplexer will output the heartbeat pulse to the 2A.
To be honest, I will recommend using the Explora 2A as primary when you are combining Explora 1 and 2a. The Explora 2A is best for Primary power-wise as well.
Best decoders to combine with Explora 2A for Extra view Setup
The following choices with the Explora 2A as Primary will not give a problem;
- Any secondary or a mix of secondaries that belong to the group “Explora (any) and series 4 single view HD”.
- Any secondary or mix of secondary decoders that belong to the group “Explora 2A and series 5 single view HD”.
- Explora 2A + Explora 1 + series 5 is believed to work fine.
However, a problem was found by when trying Explora 2A + series 4 + series 5.
I don’t know the one that failed. But it is most likely it is the 5 series that will cause the problem. This is because it has caused more issues than anything else with XtraView has for a long time. So take note of the above combination.
How to Connect two HD PVR2P Decoders for Xtraview/Extra View
- First off, with two HD PVR2P decoders, you have to change the default settings on the one decoder to use different user bands as the two interfere with each other.
- To do this, go to the network settings on one of them find the option that allows you to change the userbands and select user band. With the correct frequencies and both decoders will work. (ONLY works with the HDPVR2P, the Pace decoder IF the sw has been updated to the latest to allow it).
- For clarity, HD PVR2P Primary (best to use userbands 0,1, which is the defaults)
- HD PVR2P Secondary (2,3 or 3,4, or 4,5 or 5,6 or 6,7)
- Connect your heartbeat cable.
- Also, make sure both decoders are set to SATCR Universal in the network settings.
Warning!! Both decoders must be on all the time (connected up and powered up and at least working or on standby), as these decoders cannot supply enough power to power the SLNB on their own. the SLNB was designed to be used with the Explora decoders.
The HB these days can run between any for the RF ports, it depends on what you want to do with the RF signal if anything. So just for HB RF IN to RF IN is okay.
Moreover, with this setup, you need two have two separate xtraview subscriptions, with the single view on its own.
To mitigate these hassles, you could upgrade to an Explora plus a HD decoder 5 or 6 series( single view) and get all this on one subscription now. At least one of the decoders must be an Explora 2A though.
How to Setup Xtraview Using Explora 3A as the Primary decoder and Explora 1 as the secondary
Connecting two Explora decoders have always been easy. The diagram above illustrates how you can connect Explora 3a and 1 for xtraview. For clarification, the image above has been interpreted below:
- Run a cable from the SLNB to the room where you want the secondary decoder located. The cable should be connected to port B on the SLNB, assuming the existing decoder is connected to port A.
- Once the decoders are connected you need to configure the network settings.
I presume the Explora 1 is set to use User bands 0,1,2, which is the decoder 1 settings?
Set the Explora 3A to make use of decoder 2 settings as per the installation wizard.
- The next hurdle is the heartbeat. you will need to get a Diplexer to install behind the Explora 1 so that it will be able to receive HB from the Explora 3 via the SLNB cabling.
- In addition, you must sort this out before you contact multichoice to setup your xtraview subscription.
Setup XtraView on Explora 3A + 2A + 3A(3-in-1) Decoders
As you can see from the diagram above, one of the Explora 3A is set as the primary decoder. In tis setup, there is no need for any heartbeat cable. You only need to do the followings:
- Set one Explora 3a as primary and let it use the default user band settings. Then, connect it to Port A of the SLNB
- Set the 2A as secondary and decoder 2. It will be connected to port B of SLNB and use UB 3 an4.
- the last 3A will be the second secondary decoder and it will be named decoder 3.
- Once this is done, reboot all the decoders and call DStv to activate your Xtraview subscription on two out of the 3 decoders. The 3 decoders will, however, use the same package bouquet.
Connect Explora 1 and HD PVR 2P Decoder to Xtra View
- According to the image above, these two combinations can only work if you use the old method of sending the heartbeat pulse. That is you need to set the HD 2P PVR as your primary.
- Also, note that you will select satcr/universal on your HD 2P network settings.
- The Explora will be Unicable/satcr.
- Run your HB cable from the RF out of the HD 2P PVR to the RF IN of the Explora 1.
- Confirm your connection and call Multichoice to activate your Xtraview on the primary decoder.
Explora 1 and DStv HD Single view 5U XtraView
In this setup, it is better to use the Explora 1 as the primary decoder.
- First, connect SLNB LMX 500, 501 or 502 to the unicable port B of the 5U. Now, connect the Explora 1 to Port A
- Run two coaxial cables from A and B ports of the SLNB. 1 cable to Unicable In of the Explora. The other one to I/O port of the diplexer if you using the Aerial King diplexer.
- Place diplexer behind Explora. NowRun short cable from ANT port of diplexer to RF out of Explora. Run one long cable from SAT port in diplexer to the 5s/5u extra view decoder.

Hello, I have an Explorer 2 (I think) and HD PVR as my secondary decoder. The extraview setup has been changed since a power cut with multiple switch on and off in quick succession. I unplugged both decoders and when stable power was restored, plugged both in. Primary Explorer decoder is fine, but secondary HD PVR not. I can establish a heartbeat, but think LNB frequencies may have changed. Please advise what secondary decoder frequencies should be for LNB Lo Freq, LNB Hi frequency and LNB Switch frequency for secondary decoder. I look forward to receiving your assistance.

I had a 2a primary and explora 1 as secondary xstraview setup installation with rf outs to two bedrooms.
2a decoder hard drive caved and i replaced with 3a decoder. I installed a modulator with rf out to 1bedroom on the 3a working fine. Except the tv link remote eye on rf now not working?
The secondary decoder i setup with a diplexer. Previous heart beat cable was installed now not used. Just lying behind the primary decoder. Now the rf out to the 2nd bedroom doesnt want to work. Changed the channel frequency of the channels as well. Modulator on 63 and secondary decoder on 40. Retuned tv and still nothing.
@Nita Swanepoel: why are you using a modulator for extraview setting? it is not needed. all you need is SLNB, Diplexer(where applicable), userband freqiency and your heartbeat
Its for the rf out from lounge to main bedroom not for the xstraview setting.

Please can you assist me with my setup. I have a 3 decoder setup on my premises.
2 decoders in my main house and 1 decoder in a separate granny flat. The main house has its own Dish and the Granny flat has a separate dish. The main house Dish has a twin LNB with two cables running to a DSTV Switch (Model No 24-1Z) and the Granny flat dish has an SLNB with a unicable running to the decoder in the Granny flat. The decoders in the main house is an Explora 3A and a DSTV Explora 1 and the decoder in the Granny flat is a DSTV Explora 2.
I also have a Space TV SLX-3X2 available as I used it with my previous setup.
Any assistance you can provide will greatly be appriciated.

Curious to know whether you have been successful with your xtraview setup between your three decoders? I have the same setup and currently have the two decoders in the main house on xtraview. The granny flat has its own dish, LNB and decoder and ideally I do not want to run a cable between the main house and the granny flat. Is there a way to bring this decoder into the setup as the third xtraview decoder via its own dish and LNB?

The crux of my question, however, is the third decoder which is in a separate granny flat with its own dish and LNB. So the question remains…is there any way that I can incorporate this third decoder with its own dish and LNB into my Extraview account without having to bring a cable from the main LNB to the granny flat. @hugh: you need to connect the three decoders to the main subscription using two xytraview access. the xtraview decoders need the primary decoders to broadcast tv channels. There is a standard for doing this. i don’t think you can officially separate them, sir. You most likely need to bring all the cables from the slnb

@radira: the dsd 1131 is a hugely outdated decoder. you may experience compatibility issues down the line

@radira Robert: your best bet is to get any of their newer models be it their had decoder of the explora 3a. There is a price slash on the DStv HD decoder at the moment.

Hi Lemmy, ive got 3 explora 3a’s in an extraview setup. the trick is that this is a MUD installation. I have a 24-z1 switch which connects the explores, but I only have one LNB feed coming in. when connecting the LNB feed to the vertical/low of the switch, all 3 decoders receive signal. my question is, can the switch operate on only one feed?

@Biodun: what’s the model name of the HD decoder. You need a heartbeat cable or a diplexer for your explora 1

Am using a Unicable Quad 40mm LNB (2 legacy ports) and DSTV Switch (5-1)
Also, how do I connect the heart beat cable – can I use RF-OUT (primary decoder) to RF -IN (secondary decoder).

@Stephen: it is a problematic combination. i will recommend you get the 6s or call a dstv installer to help you. most times, you loose signal with that combination after the whole process.
I have 4s decoder connected to 6s decoder via Smart LNB is possible to do xtraview cos im getting message of no communication..is Smart LNB enough to perform Xtraview i do not anything else?

I would like to find out how to connect the Dstv DSD 111O as Primary and the Dstv 6s as secondary on smart Lnb as now the secondary keeps on saying it doesn’t get signal from primary decoder even though I understand it doesn’t need one.
The primary is connected on the universal port and the secondary is connected on port A of the smart Lnb,what is the correct connection procedure.

Hi Lemmy, I recently swapped my HDPVR for an Explora3A in an extra view setup with a 4U HD single view decoder only to find that I now also need a diplexer for the heartbeat signal. Instead of doing that I am considering upgrading the 4U to a 6S single view decoder. If I do this will I need to move the single view feed onto a UniCable port on the LNB instead of universal port where the 4U is currently connected. Can you confirm that this will work without the need for additional hardware. I have a 501 LNB installed at present. If I do this do I need to terminate the universal output of the LNB or does it stay open.

Hi Lemmy, I had a Single View 4U decoder and the old 4 tuner HD PVR running with the heartbeat running through the RF ports. The HD PVR has finally failed and I will have to replace it with an Explora 3 or 3A. I have a 501 LNB installed. Can I use the current single view and the Explora in an Extra View setup with the heartbeat going via the LNB?
Your advice will be much appreciated.

We have the explora 1 and bought a new explora 3a, so we need the diplexer to get the extra view as the 3a does not have the correct port as the 2a model.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately the issue of no RF out would still exist with a 6S.
However, i have a “spare” Explora 2a. The HDD crashed and I got an Explora 3.
I took the HDD out of the Explora 2 and now the decoder is gathering dust in the garage.
Can i replace the HDD (2.5 Sata drive I imagine)? Is it just a simple “plug in” and boot up process? Will the decoder format and partition the drive automatically?

@Chris: why do you need RF? using RF successfully and officially requires you to visit DStv office for their social discount for hotels and similar organizations that needs to connect multiple rooms. Otherwise, you may need to limit yourself to using slnb to create the heartbeat
HD PVR 2P Decoder to Xtra View with S6 decoder
Hi I have a pvr 2p decoder as the primary. How do I add the S6 as the xtraview since it has no RF ports.
Do i use a diplexer behind the PVR 2P to send one cable to S6.

I had an Explora 1 and DSD 1132 connected as Xtraview. Smart LNB installed. Heartbeat betweeb Explora and 1132. Explora Primary.
The Explora “crashed” and I replaced with Explora 3.
Can I use a Diplexer to connect the 1132 to the Explora 3 for HB and signal?
I need the 1132 as it has RF out and the secondary TV (xtraview) is not an HD TV (Old RF In)

I also now see that I have two cables that can not be connected into the new Explora 3A. How do I connect Decorder -Explora 3A with the other cables.

My explora 2 has gone faulty, so I am buying a new explora 3 (cannot get model 2 any more). I bought a dual LNB tried to install it last night but got no signal. i thought it was just plug and play?
my primary decoder is normal dstv HD decoder and i have an extra one same as dstv HD decoder.

Good day sir, please I need help. I already had DSTV Explora decoder, so i got the new DSTV 6S HD Decoder as the secondary decoder, but the installer has not been successful to get my extra view working. I have the Smart LNB(separate cables run from UNICABLE A & B ports to the Explora and the 6S decoder respectively), he also said I wouldn’t need the diplexer. After the installation, with all the manual setup settings and several troubleshooting only the Explora works. The 6S decoder has not worked. Please do you have any advice on this 6S decoder for extra view. Thanks

@Emannuel: it is very possible and straightforward to do. you need two xtraview subscriptions with one dstv subscription. However, I can say for sure yet if the 3-in-1 xtraview installation is now available in Nigeria
