The world of electronic devices is evolving by the seconds. What is in vogue or trendy today, might be archaic tomorrow. However, what is constant is the fact that even though sizes of devices tend to get smaller and lighter, devices get more features with every upgrade. Today, I will review the latest DStv single view HD decoder which many people tag a downgrade rather than an Upgrade.

Hardware comparison between the latest DStv single view HD decoder and the older DStv zappa decoder
To be honest, I am personally not impressed with the new decoder. Although my opinion doesn’t matter anyway and i have been expecting this kind of modification for a while. DStv has officially scrapped their satellite SD decoder. In its place, they now have a single view HD decoder with reduced connectivity ports.
I will be illustrating the major differences below with the help of some diagrams
What is missing in the latest DStv single view HD decoder and their implications
- The most prominent absentee is the “smart card” the Latest DStv single view HD decoder has no smartcard slot like the old HD decoder. By implication, this means you will subscribe to your packages via an IUC like GOTV. IUC stands for “identification user code” This has no unpleasant implications whatsoever. In fact, i tag this a welcome development.
- Obviously, the Latest DStv single view HD decoder is smaller than its older brother by the widest of margins. Actually, it is even smaller than the standard GOtv decoder. I will neither call this negative nor positive.I think they break even here. Space can e a luxury in many homes and this will earn its spot in such homes. Personally, I love my machines to be big and ugly lol!!!. Many people love it small and stylish.
- Another tweak noticeable on the latest DStv single view HD decoder is the trimming down of the AV port. On the older HD decoder, there used to be a 3RCA to 3RCA av port. However, the new baby has 3.5mm to 3RCA AV port like what you have below.
RF in and OUT ports are missing
Shockingly, the RF IN and RF OUT are omitted from the latest DStv single view HD decoder. The implication of this is that it is impossible to do extra/dual view with the latest DStv single view HD decoder out of the box. I will say opinions will be divided on this as some don’t care about extra views since it requires extra subscription while others business depends on this. From the look of things, they may release a dongle that will be attached to the USB port to fix this. I doubt this though. Your surest path to extra view if you do not own a zappa decoder is the explora. Also, some may even be selling their zappa decoders for twice the amount of the new one. TSTV’s official sale commencement is closer than you can imagine and this will determine a lot as to how people react.
WHAT HAVE THEY RETAINED?
Some features still remain on the hardware part of the latest DStv single view HD decoder. For example, we still have the likes of the USB port, the HDMI, DC port and the LAN port.
Comparison between the performances in the software department
Picture quality-wise, the new one is better. Also, the newer decoder tend to run slightly smoother. Also, be sure not to witness the nightmarish smart card failure being experienced by the older decoder when rattled or dropped.
This decoder is cheaper and I guess they made the changes to cut cost. My opinion doesn’t count here but i have given the most objective review you can find anywhere. It is left to you to decide. Let me quickly add that they(DStv) will not be the first to di this kind of modification as bein, canal and other have similar limitations on there base decoders. However, what we all are more nterested in is a reduction in subscription cost.
