There have been several articles on this site that tries to explain different satellite decoder terms. Most common terms about decoders have been simplified. In today’s article, I will move in the direction of simplifying the decoder’s terms even further. I tag these decoders to display standard terminology. For my valuable readers who are a novice in this, you will be able to learn why some decoders perform some operations that some cannot. For example, you will learn why SRT 4663 cannot open mpeg4 channels while 4669x can.

Terrestrial receivers
A digital terrestrial television receiver is needed to receive and display television broadcasts on a digital or analog television set, receivers can either be built into a digital TV or separate digital-to-analog converters. The channels available to terrestrial decoders are mainly in the Standard Definition (SD). Examples of unofficial t2 receivers are Alphabox x6, q28g, tiger 3000. Examples of official t2 receivers in Nigeria are Gotv, metro, CTL, and startimes. Some decoders combine satellite, multiple tuners, and terrestrial capabilities.

- SD receivers
Standard Definition (Lower Picture Quality, it is okay for TVs up to about 20 inches but HD is still noticeably clearer). This is the most common. Dstv standard decoder, strong 4663x, 4669x has a maximum capability of opening SD channels. Liberty star decoders, dovesat decoders(all defunct) are also examples of unofficial SD-only decoders. Nowadays, you will hardly get to see any new unofficial SD decoders in the market

HD Receivers
High definition (High picture quality, much better for larger TV and especially HD LCD screens). This display technology is now the norm. Many developed countries of the world no longer deal with SD receivers. In Nigeria, most of our satellite service providers also have HD receivers separately. DStv zapper, Explora, bein decoders, strong 4920 and newer, and lots more are all HD ready.

UHD and 4k
Unofficial decoders like Tiger I400 Pro are 4k ready. DStv African Explora also supports 4k but not as the native resolution. 4k is a higher resolution than Ultra HD. It is not very common in Africa yet.

Single Tuner decoders
(Can watch one station at any time.) For example, qsat, DStv decoder, canal plus decoder, early Bbein decoder

PVR receivers
(Stands for the personal video recorder. You can record programs, usually on an internal hard drive. These allow live pause, rewind, fast forward (recordings) ‚ and other features)
Twin Tuner / Dual Tuner decoders – (Dual tuner implies that this has PVR functions. Can record 1 channel while watching another or ‚ record 2 channels and even watch a previous recording at the same time.
Conclusion
Still, decoders display standard terminology, If you have a twin tuner then you will need dual LNBs and LNB holders! You need to connect two LNB cables to the back of the satellite decoder. One for each tuner. You could have these 2 wires connected to 2 different satellites! For example, the free Nigerian satellite TV channels at 42.5 degrees East and also be tuning in to other free to air TV channels.
Please Mr Lemmy Morgan, am having issues with my Qsat 23G that has been working perfectly with multi-choice (Ghana TV) but I later noticed that some channels are no more showing on it again. I decided to blind scan but it doesn’t add those channels any longer. Please what can I do on this?

@reginald: use another decoder to track it before connecting it to your disecqc switch. Ask others around you if it is up as T the time you are tracking it.
