This is an article about CTL-[Communication Trends Limited]. CTL, as it is popularly called, is a pay-TV company that targets mainly people from south-southern Nigeria and parts of the southeast including the FCT. Generally, CTL’s services are available nationwide but their sports channels are only available for to people of the abovementioned regions.
Important update as of October 2019: CTL has widely been regarded as a pirate pay-TV company because it broadcast channels that shows EPL without permission from the orginal right holders. That is the reason why CTL channels have been offline for a while.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Uyo Zonal office on Monday arrested two staff of Communication Trend Limited, Prisca Isaac and Nwosu Precious in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
They were arrested for alleged illegal transmission of broadcast signals of Multichoice (DSTV) to Uyo and environs without authorisation.
The company allegedly charges N3, 500.00 and N7, 500.00 monthly as subscription fees to its customers using DSTV and other decoders without permission.

CTL-[Communication Trends Limited]
This satellite service provider has been in operation since 1994. They started so strong, later they started having problems. CTL used to open all beIN sports on Nilesat. The decoder retails for for around #8,000 to N15,000k and then you will be paying a small monthly subscription of there subscription is #3,000 per month.
This is a terrestrial package just like GoTV and startimes hence, you don’t need any dish as it comes with an antenna. The signal is not too bad but not on par with the likes of gotv and startimes.
CTL Area of Coverage in Nigeria
Like I said earlier, CTL sports channels are only available in Abuja, Portharcourt, Akwa Ibom, Benin, Ibadan, Lagos, Owerri, Aba, Delta, Bayelsa and basically all south southern cities of Nigeria.
In their prime, they show virtually all the EPL matches, La Liga, german league, Seria A, champion league, Europa League, FA cup, carling cup etc. they are the best for the lovers of football at minimum price. Please note that this has changed and CTL and metro are currently battling with broadcast piracy issues. You may not get those beIN sports channels on their package anymore.
On their single subscription plan, there are about 56 channels mostly premium channels from the middle east these channels cut across everything u will need in a cable TVi.e news, movies (Nollywood and Hollywood), musical channels, cartoons for children and Christian TV.
it will interest you to know that there are other three companies that offer similar service with comparable channels and well affordable. the companies are CmTv, metro digital and CAN TV. they all use terrestrial decoders with the antenna.

@Nwokoli: ctl has been crippled. EFFC has raided virtually all their transmitting base station. The reason is that they have been contending with piracy issues for a while.

My CTL has stopped working since October 2nd 2019. It shows no signal since then till now in Portharcourt. Is there any general problems or issues CTL is having currently.

They are not operating in Lagos. That is where I think the customer base is strong. That is where patronage can be concomitant with profit. I hope the Multi cabal have not scared them away through the manipulation of G*** policies or paying them off the Lagos environment.

Last week’s entry of an indigenous pay-TV company, Continental Satellite Limited, into the market may have prompted the management of MultiChoice, owners of the Digital Satellite Television brand, into exploring new marketing options to retain its subscribers in the country.
One of the marketing strategies that DSTV, which for many years has been the dominant pay-TV operator in the country, intends to adopt, our correspondent reliably gathered, was the downward review of its subscription rates in tandem with that of CONSAT.
Currently, a DSTV decoder and dish sell for N15,500, while those of CONSAT go for N15,000. Monthly subscription rates for the former are between N3,000 and N11,650, while the new entrant has a flat rate of N4,000.
A MultiChoice employee in one of the DSTV offices in Lagos, who simply identified himself as Okechukwu, told our correspondent that there would be 30 per cent crash on all subscription packages after the 2014 World Cup.
He said, “The price crash will happen just before the start of the 2014/2015 English Premiership season.
“The price crash is simply to retain our customers, especially now that StarTimes seems to be doing well and there is a very strong belief that CONSAT will do better.”
Okechukwu said the belief that CONSAT would do well stems from the fact that its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Mayokun Okunola, had worked at DSTV and understood the business well.
“He (Okunola) also knows the strength and weaknesses of DSTV, and he will, no doubt, capitalise on them and make CONSAT soar,” he said.
When approached by our correspondent, Okunola said CONSAT was ready to compete in the market and offer MPEG4 digital compression technology of over 50 channels, and a plan to reach over 100 channels in 2015.
“As a key value proposition, CONSAT also offers over 10 quality TV channels to viewers even if their subscription lapses,” he said.
The CONSAT CEO said the company would eye the EPL should the need arise, but was not desperate for it as being rumoured in certain quarters.
He said the strength of pay-TV was not in bidding for the EPL rights, but in introducing new channel brands into the market that showcased favourite programmes in news and entertainment that viewers want to watch.
Okunola pointed out that the aim of CONSAT’s entry into the market was to provide world-class content at a fair price for Nigerians to facilitate true digital migration experience as countries around the world would migrate from analogue to digital broadcasting in 2015.
He said, “The level of penetration is still surprisingly slow. As a consequence of digital migration and the lead up to 2015, it is clear that the number of households that require decoders will grow considerably.
“Currently, there are about two million active subscribers in Nigeria, yet we have in excess of 20 million homes.”
Okunola said this necessitated the need to create room for new entrants.
“Subscribers are passionate about TV and their preferences vary; our goal is to offer choices that do not currently exist in the Nigerian market,” he said.
The Public Relations Manager, DSTV, Caroline Oghuma, said MultiChoice welcomed competition.

But Bein sports on CTL runs in Arabic Commentary and they don’t have an HD decoder, as such we can’t watch HD contents.
I think they should upgrade and start producing HD decoders b4 I can give them a try. Even StarTimes now has HD decoders.
But honestly, CTL is ok & pretty good for their rates.

D subscription is still expensive. Qsat is cheaper and its getting more and more effective. Imagine watching qsat for 9hours with a modem and no shaking at all. Let CLT reduce dia subscription to 1,500 den dey’ve won d war and not the battle

I enjoyed CTL when I was still in Benin. Dstv fought them and made them only restricted to Southsouth. They later stop the sales of their decoder in 2011. It was then being sold illegally @ 15k instead of normal 8k. But in 2013 I was available @ my installer shop open and no longer hidden. I guess it’s now legally sold. I have been away from Benin city for past 2yrs and my CTL is just wasting. I miss CTL.
